Gainesville, Georgia- Brenau softball head coach Devon Thomas earned his 700th career victory after his squad split with Columbia International (SC) University in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday.
Thomas, who started the Brenau softball program in 2003-04, sits among the NAIA's all-time winningest softball coaches after his squad rallied to win the second game of the afternoon doubleheader.
After falling in the opening game by a 4-3 score, the Golden Tigers and Rams battled to a stalemate in game two through the first seven innings of play as neither team could seize advantage. In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Golden Tigers finally took control as junior Ava Moon singled off Rams' starter Abby Ragan to score Dayton Power to earn the walkoff victory by a 4-3 margin.
Power and Moon combined for six hits, two RBIs and four steals, while Riley Smith and Peyton Hawkins each added RBIs in the win. Starting pitcher Emily Hall threw all 11 innings to earn the victory. Hall allowed only two earned runs, while striking out a career-best 10 batters to help her team secure the win.
Brenau (14-8 overall, 5-1 AAC) hosts Columbia (SC) College (15-11 overall, 3-7 AAC) in a conference doubleheader at Ernest Ledford Grindle Athletics Park on Sunday at 1 pm.
