The Brenau volleyball team split a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference road matches as the squad fell to Columbia (SC) International University 3-0, but rallied to sweep newcomer Spartanburg Methodist (SC) College 3-0 this weekend.
On Friday, junior Hannah Werner led the Golden Tiger attack with 15 kills, and junior setter Nathalia Quintero added 16 assists. However, the team came up just short in a 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 25-27) loss to Columbia International (5-5 overall, 1-1 AAC). Junior Jomaris Maldonado had a solid defensive effort with 14 digs.
With a quick turnaround on Saturday, the team regrouped to sweep host Spartanburg Methodist 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 28-26) and secure its first conference win of the season.
Werner posted 11 kills and 11 digs, while junior Ashlyn Browning added 11 kills and 12 digs. Quintero also had an all-around solid performance with 32 assists and 15 digs. Maldonado had 11 digs, while junior Claire Beckman and freshman Alyssa Evans posted 7 kills each.
Brenau (4-6 overall, 1-1 AAC) continues its early-season road slate with a trip to Reinhardt (Ga.) University (10-4 overall, 2-0 AAC) on Tuesday at 6:30 pm Eastern.
