Volleyball Outpaces St. Andrews 3-1 in AAC Play
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau volleyball team started slowly but rallied to defeat St. Andrews (NC) University 3-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup.
In the first set, the Knights jumped out to an early 7-6 lead and held the advantage until a service ace by junior Gabrielle Hogle evened the match at 13-13. The visitors responded with a four point run to take their largest lead of the match. The Golden Tigers rallied to close the gap to 22-21 behind kills from Hogle and sophomore Chloe Bennett, however, St. Andrews (5-16 overall, 5-6 AAC) closed strong to take the first set 25-23.
In the second set, the Knights again jumped out to a fast start and held the lead until a service error by Samantha Byrd allowed the home team to tie the match at 19-19. The Golden Tigers then closed the set on a 6-1 run, including taking five straight points to win the set 25-21.
With the match even, Brenau rolled through the third set 25-16 for a 2-1 advantage and then used the momentum to take the fourth set 25-22 and clinch the victory.
Junior Mary Ellen Enright paced the offense with 15 kills as Brenau outhit St. Andrews with an .272 to .117 attack percentage.
Brenau (11-10 overall, 6-5 AAC) next travels to Columbia International (SC) University (18-6 overall, 10-1 AAC) on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
