Volleyball Falls to Reinhardt in AAC Play
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau volleyball team lost a close match against Reinhardt (Ga.) University 3-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Tuesday.
In a highly competitive first set, the visiting Eagles stormed out to an early 8-6 advantage, however, three consecutive service aces by freshman Malone Davis helped the Golden Tigers take the lead at 11-9. The home squad held control until back-to-back kills by Reinhardt's Allison Selway gave the visitors a 27-26 lead late in the match. After Reinhardt's Alma Vazquez-Nunez hit a service error to even the match at 27-27, the Eagles rallied to score the last two points of the frame to earn the win.
In the second set, the visitors again stormed out to an early lead with a 12-7 advantage. Senior TyLeeah Maddox posted a kill to cut the deficit to 12-8, but Reinhardt responded with three straight points to make the score 15-8. Senior Rachel Hodges added a kill to stop the Eagles' run, but the Golden Tigers couldn't gain any ground as the team's traded points over the next several possessions.
With Reinhardt holding a 22-15 lead, the Brenau attack finally responded with a seven point run, including two kills by junior Mary Ellen Enright, to even the match at 22-22. The Golden Tigers failed to hold momentum as Reinhardt scored the final three points to close the set and escape with a 25-23 set win.
In the final set, Reinhardt (8-6 overall, 5-2 AAC) outlasted Brenau to win 25-18 and sweep the match.
Davis led the Golden Tigers offense with 10 kills and junior Julieanne Saliba added 26 kills on the defensive front.
The visiting Eagles outhit the Golden Tigers with a .222 to .084 hitting percentage advantage.
Brenau (8-9 overall, 3-4 AAC) next plays host to Bluefield (Va.) University (11-6 overall, 7-1 AAC) on Friday.
