Volleyball Splits; Koon Reaches 1000 Kills
The Brenau volleyball split two Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) matches over the weekend as the Golden Tigers defeated Brewton Parker (Ga.) College but fell to #13 College of Coastal Georgia.
On Friday, Brenau hit past the visiting Barons in four sets to capture their seventh win of the season. In the opening two frames, the Golden Tigers won 25-12 and 25-11 for a 2-0 lead. After giving away the third set 20-25, the home team closed out the win 25-15.
The match also marked the 1000th kill for outside hitter Sydney Koon. The Johns Creek, Georgia senior is currently ranked 8th in the nation in kills per set (4.08).
Koon also led the Golden Tigers with 19 kills, while Carlee Praznik added 13 digs in the win.
"Congratulations to Sydney [Koon] for her 1,000th kill against Brewton Parker," said head coach Michael Carter. "To accomplish this in less than three seasons is really a testament to how good of a hitter she is in just about any situation.
Against the nationally-ranked Mariners, the Golden Tigers lost the first set 16-25, but pushed the second set to the limit before falling 24-26. Unable to hold momentum, Brenau lost the final set 21-25.
Cayla Graham led the Golden Tigers with 13 kills, while Pam Konken added 16 assists.
"We played well against a very tough Coastal Georgia team today," noted Carter. "We had opportunities in both the second and third sets, but Coastal made a couple of great digs to earn both sets."
"I'm proud of the team for playing hard. We are finally healthy and are moving in the right direction".
Brenau (7-11 overall, 2-6 SSAC) next travels to non-conference Fort Valley (Ga.) State University on Tuesday at 7 pm eastern.
