Brenau Volleyball Drops Close SSAC Match
September 29, 2012
The Brenau University volleyball team went to Lee University on last night and gave the NAIA #6 ranked side all they could handle in a 5 set loss, 18-25, 26-24, 30-28, 17-25, 9-15.
The Golden Tigers fought hard and made incredible plays on offense and defense. Historically, Brenau teams have been unable to take a single set from a Lee side, but this year's team took two sets from the Flames and came close to winning the match.
Sydney Koon (John Creek, GA) led all Brenau scorers with 16 kills. Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA) had 15 kills and 13 digs, and Ellen Lemos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) contributed 15 kills and 12 digs. Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) added 9 kills and 15 digs in the heartbreaking loss. Mekenna Cipres (Murietta, CA) led the offense with 52 assists- a season high- and was consistently composed under pressure. In the end, the Flames 6'3" freshman, Nicole Sumida, proved to be too much for Brenau as she finished with 18 kills- many coming in sets 4 and 5.
The Golden Tigers will have another chance at Lee when they visit Brenau on October 9th. Next up for the Tigers is an October 2nd match-up against SSAC foe Truett-McConnell College at 7pm at the East Hall Community Center. Brenau then travels to Mobile, AL to take on Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile on October 5th and 6th.
