Brenau Beats Loyola in Three
The Golden Tigers ran their record to 9-2 overall, 2-0 in SSAC action in exciting fashion while handing the seniors a first ever win over rival Loyola (LA).
The Wolfpack came into the match with an 8-1 record and were Receiving Votes in the latest NAIA National Rankings.
Brenau beat the visitors in straight sets with scores of: 25-17, 25-19 and 26-24. After Brenau dominated the first two sets, Loyola came out fighting in the third set and built leads of 9-3, 17-14, and 20-17, before Brenau surged to tie the set at 24-24. The Golden Tigers then finished the last two points and won the match in exciting fashion. It was an emotional night for the seniors who had never beaten Loyola and they took advantage of their final opportunity.
Individually, Sydney Koon (Johns Creek, GA) and Ellen Lemos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) accounted for 13 kills apiece. Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA) chipped in 11 kills of her own. Lemos led in the attack percentage with a .409 on 22 attempts and Thornton was steady at .367 on 30 attempts. On the night, Lemos posted a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs and Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) recorded 11 digs in the win.
The Tigers will face SSAC rival Belhaven University on Saturday at 1pm at the East Hall Complex. The Blazers are currently 8-2/1-0 in the SSAC.
