Golden Tigers Maul Lions

The Golden Tigers volleyball team opened their 2012 season with an exciting 3-1 win over the visiting Bryan College (TN) Lions on Tuesday night. The Tigers are excited about the great start and have doubled down on training efforts this week as they prepare for the Limestone Classic Tournament in Gaffney, S.C. this weekend.
Brenau's match with Bryan was close for the first three games but the Tigers finally emerged in the 4th game with a convincing win. In set one, Brenau managed a tight win by the final score of 27-25. At one point, Brenau was down by 5 points before a critical serving run from Sydney Koon (Johns Creek, GA) closed the gap. Set 2 was equally exciting as the score was tied at 23 apiece before the visitors won the last 2 points to take the win 25-23. Mekenna Cipres (Murieta, CA) and Ellen Lemos (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), both contributed with impressive serving runs in the third set to help the Tigers to the 25-22 win. In the fourth and final set, the Tigers dominated play and easily took the win by the score of 25-13 and closed out the match 3-1.
For the match, Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) and newcomer, Koon contributed 14 kills apiece. Cipres finished with 4 service aces on the night as the Golden Tigers picked up their first win of the 2012 season.
First year Head Coach, Jeff White, was very pleased with the team's effort and attitude in the match and had this to say about the effort, "We are working hard to control the things we can and not worry about the rest. Bryan College is a good team and gave us a great test in our first match of the season."
The Golden Tigers record currently stands at 1-0. Next up for Brenau is the Limestone Classic Tournament in Gaffney, SC where they are scheduled to play two matches on Aug. 31st- the first against Southern Wesleyan University (SC) at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match against host Limestone College.
