The Golden Tigers Are Back on the Prowl
CARNESVILLE, Ga - The Golden Tigers volleyball team hit the road, prepared to play against Emmanuel College, on Tuesday evening. Brenau defeated the Lions in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-10, and 25-22. The Golden Tigers improve their overall record to 9-10 (2-7 SSAC).
In the first set of the match, Emmanuel took hold of the lead quickly, however Brenau clawed their way out of the hole, and tied up the game at the 15 point mark. They continued to build their momentum under all the pressure, and took first set 25-20.
The Golden Tigers proved to be consistent and disciplined in the second set, keeping their opponents at a 10 point barrier. Coach Meredith Franklin commented "our team played extremely well in this match. We were consistent in communicating to one another, moving our feet on defense, and making aggressive offensive plays. The players played with intensity and confidence once againand I for one could not be any happier."
The Lions rallied back and forth in the third set, against Brenau. The Golden Tigers maintained a comfortable lead for the majority of the match, until Emmanuel managed to catch up with them 23-22. As the Golden Tigers played with consistency, Emmanuel made two consecutive hitting errors, ultimately giving Brenau the game point.
Senior Alexis Arthur (Aiken, SC) led the team with 7 kills, while also collecting 2 service aces and 9 digs. Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA), an outside hitter, totaled 6 kills, along with 1 service ace and 15 digs. Kerry Abernathy (Celebration, FL) and Rachel Adam (Athens, GA) both ended with 5 kills for the night; Abernathy also earned 9 assists and 11 digs during the match, while Adam made 8 blocks, 1 dig and 1 assist. Mekenna Cipres (Murrieta, CA) contributed to Brenau's offense with 19 assists and 4 kills, as Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) collected 4 kills, 14 digs, and 2 blocks for the match.
The team will host the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Wednesday, October 5th. The conference match is scheduled to start @ 7:00pm.
