Golden Tigers Split at Limestone Classic
GAFFNEY, Sc - The Golden Tigers volleyball team split yesterday, while they competed in the Limestone College Classic, taking a win against Fort Valley State University and a loss against Limestone College. Brenau swept Fort Valley in three straight sets, with the scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-15, but the Golden Tigers had little time to celebrate as they had to immediately prepare to play Limestone. The Saints outlasted Brenau, and came back from behind in each set, with the final scores being 19-25, 22-25, and 25-27.
The Golden Tigers held a strong lead against Fort Valley throughout the entire match. "I was happy to see that we did not get distracted or complacent", commented Coach Meredith Franklin.
Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) went down swinging, as she collected 9 kills, along with 2 service aces and 17 digs. Rachel Adam (Athens, GA) also made a presence on the court with 7 kills, 3 digs, and 8 blocks. Junior setter, Mekenna Cipres (Murietta, CA) finished the game with 6 kills, 12 assists, 5 digs, and a single service ace.
When Brenau faced off against the Saints, they quickly made a lead, however the saints were persistent and tied it back up at the 12-point mark. From then on, throughout the set, Limestone maintained the momentum. Coach Franklin added, "The second and third set were great, we played aggressively, and did not hold back. Limestone took the second set from us, making the final points off of line shots. We had the third set won, but some bad calls came our wayand we will have to learn to adapt to that in the future".
In the match against Limestone College, Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA) collected 12 kills, 9 digs, 6 blocks, and 1 service ace. Alexis Arthur (Aiken, SC) played strong throughout the day, as she earned 6 kills, 10 digs, 10 blocks, and a single service ace against the Saints.
