Brenau Continues Their Winning Streak, 3-0
ATLANTA, Ga - The Golden Tigers have now advanced to an overall record of 3-0, as they proved victorious in Oglethorpe University's season opener. On Friday evening, Brenau battled for every point in their match against the stormy petrels, winning in 3 straight sets again, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23.
"As a team we had some great plays, but we struggled a few times with adapting to their offense. Our players did a great job of staying aggressive even when we were trailing for the majority of the third set," stated Coach Franklin.
Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA), junior outside hitter, regained her position as the Golden Tiger's offensive leader. Thornton collected 12 kills, 2 assists, 2 service aces, 8 digs, and 1 block. Freshman Rachel Adam (Athens, GA) was a huge asset to Brenua's offense yesterday evening, as she earned 11 kills and 6 blocks.
"We had a few mishaps while running our defense, but the team did an amazing job of moving on to the next play. In future games though, we need react a little bit quicker when we are trying to adjust to a team's offense, " added Coach Franklin.
Alexis Arthur (Aiken, SC) made her presence known from the middle; she earned 8 kills, 8 digs and 5 blocks. Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) contributed 4 kills to the Golden Tigers, and also collected 2 service aces and 11 digs.
The setters have continued to run an effective 6-2 offense, spreading the attack attempts throughout the entire front row. Mekenna Cipres (Murietta, CA) had 2 kills, 14 assists, 3 service aces, 6 digs, and 5 blocks, while Kerry Abernathy (Celebration, FL) brought 1 kill, 15 assists, 1 service ace, and 7 digs.
Coach Franklin commented, "as we progress in our season we show more promise, and depth. Our hitting placement was much stronger, but we were a bit slow on our defense. We need to clean up a few minor things before our next match against Clark Atlanta University."
The Golden Tigers will face off against the Lady Panthers on Monday, September 5th @ 7:00pm.
