Brenau Loses in Three at Lee
September 30, 2009
Cleveland, TN- The Brenau Golden Tigers volleyball team lost their third match in the last four and dropped to 9-4 on the season and 1-3 in the SSAC with a straight set sweep at the hands of Lee University tonight, 25-11, 25-11, 25-18. The Flames, who are 14-4 on the season and 6-0 in the conference, won their seventh straight and are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Volleyball Top 25 poll.No less than 11 different players contributed statistically in the match for the Tigers, with everyone gaining valuable playing time against quality competition. The three seniors continued their consistent play, with Maida Smajic (seven digs and eight receptions), Audra VanArsdale (14 assists, a dig and a kill), and Karen Green (seven kills, for receptions, and three digs) giving solid performances. Junior Courtney Frady came up with eight digs and five receptions and Freshmen Danelle Russell (six receptions and three digs), MeKenna Cipres (15 receptions, three digs and a kill) and Melissa Thornton (four kills, two digs and two receptions) had good moments in the match. Coach Meredith Matthews knows that this dip in the road is more about the competition the Tigers are playing than the quality of their play and said, "We know what to do now and we are playing the way we want but we just aren't enjoying the game. We need to go out there and have fun and relax and things will start to go our way." Brenau will return home for another SSAC match against Southern Wesleyan tomorrow night.
