Track Opens 2016 With Strong Showing
In the opening meet of 2016, the Brenau track team finished a close second to the University of West Georgia and had several notable showings at the Cougar Invitational on Saturday in Columbus, Ga.
With a field consisting of primarily NCAA Division I and II teams, the Golden Tigers showed well with 118 points- 41 ahead of third place Albany State (Ga.) University.
West Georgia finished first with 127.50 points, while Clark Atlanta (Ga.) University (62 points) finished fourth and the University of Montevallo (Ala.) finished fifth (62 points).
Hunter Creswell and Ayana Daniels started the meet with strong first and second place respective finishes in the pole vault.
Dana Cole then won the discus with a personal record and national qualifying throw of over 42 meters.
Lammy Sokunbi also had a standout showing, winning the triple jump (11.48) and the 100 meters (12.25) and also combined with her teammates Cheyenne Wells, Amber Curney and Deishane' Honeycutt to win the 4 x 100 relay.
Other standout performances include Nia Griffin (1st place/800 meter run), Aubrey Fearnow (3rd place/discus throw), Jasmine Ray (5th place/800 meter run) and Cheyenne Wells (3rd place/200 meter run).
"They girls came to compete and I am pleased with the effort, said head coach Byron Kramer. "We are not yet at full strength as we still have key members out, but the team is coming together well and could very well be our strongest Golden Tiger team ever."
Brenau next travels to the Birmingham Southern Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama on March 11-12.
