Track Leads SSAC Championships After Day 1
After six events, the Brenau track and field team leads the seven-team SSAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama in hopes of a third straight conference championship.
The Golden Tigers crowned two individual champions on day one as Dana Cole (JR/West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Hunter Creswell (JR/Calhoun, Ga.) each won their respective events.
Cole, the reigning SSAC Field Athlete of the Year, won the discus with a throw of 43.36, while Creswell earned the individual crown in the pole vault with a vault of 3.25 meters.
Brenau also earned first place honors as the 4x800 team of Deishane' Honeycutt (JR/Stone Mountain, Ga.), Monika Nwajei (SO/Dunwoody, Ga.), Brianna Archer (FR/Covington, Ga.) and Jasmine Ray (JR/Bowling Green, Ky.) captured championship honors.
A pair of Golden Tigers performed well in the 10,000 meters as Elena Oslund (JR/Albany, Ga.) finished second in 1:06.52, while Brittany Aikens (SR/Braselton, Ga.) placed third in 42:15.53.
Four Brenau athletes placed in the long jump as Yasmine Reynolds (FR/Quitman, Ga.) (2nd place, 5.29 meters), Olamide Sokunbi (JR/Marietta, Ga.) (3rd place, 5.26 meters), Ismaelle Occeus (SO/Lawrenceville, Ga.) (4th place, 5.12 meters) and Jasmine Steen (JR/Columbus, Ga) (7th place, 4.89 meters) each scored points in the event.
Aubrey Fearnow (JR/Arnoldsville, Ga.) (33.15 meters) also placed third in the javelin, while Kaitlyn Gearing (FR/Sautee Nacoochee, Ga.) (fourth place, 32.84 meters), Creswell (seventh place, 30.90 meters) and Andrea Holloway (SR/Newnan, Ga.) (eighth place, 27.61) all placed in the top eight.
Brenau ends day one with 91 total points, while Loyola (La.) University and University of Mobile (Ala.) tied for second with 28 points.
