Track Has Strong Day One At SSAC Championships
After the first day of the SSAC Track and Field Championships, the defending champion Brenau Golden Tigers scored 86 points through six events to take a commanding lead over second place Southern Wesleyan (SC) University.
In the 10,000 meter run, Brittany Aikens captured first place with a time of 39:25:83, while Sarah Saenz captured fourth place in 43:29:88.
The 4 x 800 relay team next captured first place as the team of Jasmine Ray, Utami Ketchem, Aunica Clinton and Deishane Honeycutt squeaked by second place Emmanuel (Ga.) College in 9:52:32.
Morgan Creswell won the Pole Vault with a height of 9-11.25, while the Golden Tigers swept 4th-6th place as Kayla Madsen, Taylor Daigrepont and Snowie Saunders each scored points.
Olamide Sokunbi finished second in the long jump (17-04), while teammate Ismaelle Occeus (16-03) scored one point with an 8th place finish.
In the Discus Throw, Dana Cole easily won with a dominating throw of 42.35 meters, while Aubrey Fearnow, Andrea Holloway and Rebecca Riddle scored points with third, sixth and seventh place finishes respectively.
The Golden Tigers also placed two in the Javelin as Fearnow and Devony Hemingway finished in fourth and fifth places respectively to add to the overall score.
Day two continues on Saturday as the Golden Tigers hope to continue their success and repeat as Conference Champions.
