Tennis Wins Second SSAC Match
The #7 Brenau tennis team defeated #20 Coastal Georgia 8-1 to earn its second straight Southern States Athletic Conference win on Friday in Macon, Georgia.
The Golden Tigers started the match with a significant 3-0 lead as the Mariners forfeited matches at #3 doubles and #5 and #6 singles. Brenau added to their lead as the #2 doubles team of Maya Mammetgulyyeva and Kirsten Dickins won their match 8-2.
However, the Mariners played well at #1 doubles as their team of Daniela Caruso and Emy Alplund defeated Fatyha Berjane and Rebecca Pijls 8-5 to make the team score 4-1.
In singles play, Mammetgulyyeva easily outpaced Samantha Lasslet 6-0, 6-0 at #3 singles to clinch the match.
Other singles winners include Fatyha Berjane (7-5, 6-1), Rebecca Pijls (2-6, 6-2, 11-9) and Kelley Cohron (6-1, 6-1).
"Unfortunately, Coastal only had four players, but it was still a very good match," said head coach Andre Ferreira. "Coastal played flawlessly at #1 doubles and deserves praise for their performance. Our #2 doubles team clicked again and finished on a good note."
"My biggest excitement was in our singles play as Maya (Mammetgulyyeva) is improving each match and Rebecca (Pijls) had the opportunity to play #2 singles this week and did not disappoint. It was also comforting to count on Fatyha (Berjane) and Kelley's (Cohron) experience today and knowing that they can handle the pressure of facing a nationally ranked opponent."
Brenau (3-1, 2-0 SSAC) next travels to Division III perennial powerhouse Emory (Ga.) University on December 20th for a 2 pm eastern matchup.
