Montgomery, AL - On Saturday morning, the #8 Brenau University Tennis Team faced off against #4 Auburn University at Montgomery, in the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament Championship. As both teams battled for the SSAC Champion Title, the Senators began to stand out in their performance on the court. Competing in the No. 1 spot, for doubles, Lyn See Choo (Malaysia) and Hannah Thompson (England) lost to Curtis and Veselinovic, 8-4. AUM earned their 2nd point of the match, when Kate Mazakova (Czech Republic) and Liubov Orlova (Russia) fell to Zowczak and Hajkova, 8-4. Stephanie Moniz (England) and Eline Nagels (Belgium) received Brenau's 1st point, due to default.
With the score, 2-1, the Golden Tigers attempted to change the momentum, in their favor, during singles play; unfortunately, they did not succeed. At the No. 2 spot, Curtis proved to be victorious over Mazackova, winning the match 6-0, 6-1. Thompson lost to Zowczak, 6-2, 6-1, giving AUM their 4th point of the championship match. With the Senators only needing 1 more point, Hajkova took control and placed Orlova in the position of having to face defeat once more. Choo, and Nagels did not finish their matches because of the 5 point standard, that was set for later part of the SSAC Tournament. As for Moniz, she earned the 2nd point for Brenau, due to default, once again.
When asked about the championship match, Head Tennis Coach, Andre Ferriera, responded by saying, "AUM has a very talented team, we have to give them credit. No wonder they are ranked in the top 5 in the NAIA. Our Golden Tigers really fought hard, forcing the Lady Senators to play their best tennis. It was a fun match to watch."
