February 5, 2011
Clemson, SC - The Brenau Golden Tigers tennis team started their season against some top competitors at the Clemson Invitational today. In the morning, the Golden Tigers played 3 doubles matches against the #9 ranked team in NCAA I, Clemson University. In the afternoon, the Tigers came back to the courts to compete in seven singles matches against the #1 ranked team and defending national champions in NCAA II, Armstrong Atlantic State University. The three best performances of the day came from one doubles and two singles matches. In doubles, Kate Mazackova and Lyn See Choo pushed Clemson's number 1 doubles team until the very end, losing the battle 8-5. In singles, playing against the 25th best player in NCAA II, freshman Stephanie Moniz came really close to winning the first set. After being up 5-4, Moniz was not able to maintain her high level, and lost to Kathleen Henry from Armstrong Atlantic 7-5, 6-1. In the closest match of the day, junior Lyn See Choo showed that the Brenau Tigers can compete at any level. Choo played a very close match, had 3 set points to win the first set, before falling to Alida Muller-Wehlau (Armstrong) in 3 sets with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 10-6. Muller-Wehlau from Armstrong Atlantic is currently the best tennis player in NCAA II, with an ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) ranking of #1 in both singles and doubles.
"It was an incredible tennis match, physically and mentally demanding, with long rallies and very fast pace. It was high level tennis and sometimes this is a tough sport: someone has to win at the end. Unfortunately minor details brought the victory to Armstrong Atlantic today, but Lyn See should be proud of the way she competed today", said Coach Andre Ferreira.
The Golden Tigers return to battle in doubles against Georgia State in the morning, and singles against Clemson University in the afternoon.
