Brenau Takes Second Place At The Converse Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Brenau University swim team competed in the
two-day Women's Invitational hosted by Converse College, also attended
by Hollins University.
Friday night's session proved to be owned by the Golden Tigers, winning six of nine events taking NCAA II Converse to a close point score of 148-133.
Stellar performance raced by senior Hannah Boudreaux (Lafayette, La.) 1650 free (17:56) and 200 fly (2:10), sophomore Michelle Billeaud (Lafayette, La.) 200 back (2:12), freshman Mary Katherine Jabbia (Slidell, La.) 200 breast (2:28) and 200 IM (2:16), as well as personal best times from freshman swimmers, Rachel Kendrick (Pineville, La.) 200 back (2:26) and 50 free (26.30); Ali Watkins (Watkinsville, Ga.) 200 breast (2:46).
The evening began with a takeover in the 200 Medley Relay (1:53) and a 1, 3 and 4 place sweep in the 1650 free. The Golden Tigers claimed first in the 200 back, 200 breast and 200 fly. The final race of the evening was a nail biter, with Brenau out touching Converse in the 400 Free Relay with a (3:40).
Day two of competition provided more obstacles and close races, but Tigers stepped up to the challenge capturing first places in the 400 Medley Relay (4:09), Billeaud 100 back (1:01), sophomore Meredith Barrington (Macon, Ga.) 100 fly (1:02), Boudreaux 400 IM (4:44) and Jabbia 100 breast (1:10). Junior Monica Souther also showed off a best time in the 100 fly (1:12), while veteran Lisa Portwood (Marrietta, Ga.) and newcomer Kathleen Rossi (Clearwater, Fla.) added depth in the 500 free (5:41 & 5:44).
The final score of the Converse Invitational is CC 305 - BU 243 - HU 105. Brenau swimmers bring home a second place overall finish, holding Converse at the edge of their seats, having won 12 of 17 events and qualifying six individuals for the NAIA National Championships.
Head Swim Coach, Blaire Bachman comments "This team raced down to the final inch, touching out Converse time after time. This shows we have guts and are ready to challenge ourselves with harder training. We've got more work to do to gain that extra endurance and prepare ourselves mentally for the upcoming challenge of swimming NCAA D I & II schools in two weeks."
Brenau Swimming will be off until Oct. 26, returning to the pool to swim Queens College and Converse in a double dual in Charlotte, N.C.
