Gainesville, Georgia- Three first-half goals and solid defensive play propelled the Brenau soccer team past Spartanburg Methodist (SC) 3-0 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match on Wednesday.
The Golden Tigers struck first in the 18th minute as freshman Ellen Odland took a pass from sophomore forward Madison Kitson and beat Pioneer keeper Ava Wilson for the opening goal of the match. Fellow forward Sofia Cavazos joined the scoring in the 31st minute off an Emily Tamayo assist to make the score 2-0. The scoring flurry continued less than two minutes later as senior Haley Wilton assisted Odlund on her second goal of the half for a commanding 3-0 Golden Tigers lead.
Brenau keeper Zyara Gonzalez-Galeano led a strong defensive effort with 6 saves as the squad notched its sixth shutout of the season.
Cavazos' goal marked her fourth goal of the season, while Odlund posted the first two goals of her collegiate career. Tamayo fifth assist of the season pushed her into the top-five in assists in the AAC, while Gonzalez-Galeano sits among conference leaders in total saves (71) and save percentage (.826).
Brenau (6-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 AAC) next hits the road to take on the University of Pikeville (6-1-3 overall, 4-1-2 AAC) on Saturday at 11 am Eastern.
