Soccer Defeats Tennessee Wesleyan 2-1
Gainesville, Georgia- A quick goal and a last second clutch save helped the Brenau soccer team defeat Tennessee Wesleyan University 2-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening.
Six minutes into the match, Itzel Rivera took a pass from Casey Qua and blasted a shot past Bulldog keeper Lauren Teal to give the Golden Tigers an early 1-0 lead. The Brenau defense held tight throughout the remainder of the first half as the score remained unchanged going into halftime.
In the 52nd minute, a Bulldog penalty resulted in a free kick for Ellie Johnson, who bounced a shot past Teal to increase the score to 2-0.
Despite a barrage of shots from Tennessee Wesleyan, the Brenau defense continued to hold until the 80th minute when Livia Walker scored to cut the score to 2-1.
In the final ten seconds, Walker again threatened with an accurate shot from the left wing, but Golden Tigers keeper Anela Melton had a diving save to help her team capture the victory.
Tennessee Wesleyan outshot Brenau 20-9 in the match, while Melton saved 12 shots to Teal's two saves in goal.
Brenau (3-3-1 overall, 2-1 AAC) next travels to Columbia (SC) College (3-2 overall, 2-1 AAC) on Saturday for a 3:30 eastern AAC matchup.
