Soccer Defeats Faulkner on Homecoming Weekend
On a rainy Saturday, the Brenau soccer team played through difficult weather conditions to earn a 1-0 victory over Faulkner (Ala.) University on Homecoming weekend on Sunday in Gainesville.
The Golden Tigers' Tiffany Raygor scored in the first minute as Jensen Meaux assisted to give Brenau a fast 1-0 lead. The goal was the freshman's fourth goal of the season and proved to be the difference in the match.
As both teams struggled through the rain and wet field conditions, neither team could find another scoring opportunity until a Brenau penalty gave Faulkner a penalty kick. However keeper Ashley Spring came up with a big save to help secure the win.
Brenau outshot Faulkner 10-8 for the match as Spring stopped all eight of the visiting Eagles' shots.
"This was a big win for us and am so proud of the team playing in conditions that aren't really meant for the game to be played but prevailing nonetheless," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "We had some really nice scoring opportunities and under ordinary circumstances they would have likely ended up in the back of the net. Our defense played very well and credit to Ashley [Spring] for coming up huge for us on a few critical game winning saves!"
Brenau (5-3, 1-0 SSAC) next plays host to #2 University of Mobile (Ala.) in an SSAC matchup at 5:30 on Thursday in Gainesville.
