Soccer Wins Season Opener Over Point
Three first half goals helped propel the Brenau soccer team to a season-opening 3-2 win over Point (Ga.) University in West Point, Ga. on Tuesday.
The Golden Tigers stormed out to an early lead through the strong offensive play of two freshmen as Maddie Corley and Tiffany Raygor connected early and often.
Inside the third minute, Corley found Raygor for her first career goal for a 1-0 lead. Corley then added her first career goal in the 16th minute to make the score 2-0. Less than a minute later, the tandem of Corley and Raygor again connected as Raygor found the back of the net for her second goal of the match to give the Golden Tigers a commanding 3-0 lead.
Point responded with two first half goals from Jessica Torres and Kristabelle Rangel to make the score 3-2 at intermission.
In the second half, the Brenau defense held strong as keeper Ashley Spring saved two shots to notch her first career win.
The Golden Tigers outshot the Skyhawks 7-2 in the first half and 9-6 for the match.
"It was great to come away with the win and doing so with an entirely new team made it even more special," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "We came out very strong in the first twenty minutes and put away three nice goals. We will work on eliminating costly errors and will get better at keeping the ball, but I'm very happy with the win and the intensity with which we're playing."
Brenau (1-0, 0-0 SSAC) next travels to Thomas (Ga.) University on Sunday for a 1 pm non-conference showdown.
