Bulldogs Sneak Past Golden Tigers 1-0
In a battle of NAIA Top-25 teams, the #17 Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team lost a close 1-0 match to the #8 Cumberland (Tenn.) University Bulldogs on Saturday evening in Gainesville.
Brenau controlled the pace as the Golden Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 6-2 in the first half. However, Brenau couldn't capitalize on their chances and took a 0-0 tie into intermission.
In the second half, Brenau continued to get scoring opportunities and dominating shots on goal, but the scoring drought continued for the Golden Tigers, who were unable to take the lead.
Cumberland, however, made the most of their limited opportunity when Shauna Gilpin knocked in the game winning goal at 59:42 on Cumberland's lone shot in the second half.
Head Coach Mike Lochstampfor was pleased with his team's performance despite the loss saying, "The team stuck to the game plan tonight and it almost paid off with some golden opportunities that we failed to capitalize on. Our defense was excellent against a very good side! I was very proud of our effort and intensity!"
The Golden Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 9-1 in the second half and 15-3 for the match.
Brenau (2-2-1) next hosts Reinhardt (Ga.) University on Tuesday at 7 pm.
