Racers Slip By Golden Tigers
The #17 ranked Brenau Golden Tigers lost a close match to the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers 2-1 on Wednesday.
Starting quickly, Brenau senior forward Kayla Madsen had a prime chance to score in the early first half, but Racers keeper Nadine Stonjek corralled the shot to keep the score at 0-0. Although Brenau held a 4-3 shots on goal advantage in the first half, the Racers capitalized on their opportunities with a 39th minute goal from Laura Stone to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
After trailing for most of the second half, the Golden Tigers finally evened the score in the 79th minute as senior Anna Garrett found junior midfielder Monica Sanchez running free on the left flank. Sanchez took Garrett's pass and dropped her shot over Stonjek for her first goal of the season.
The Golden Tigers' momentum was short-lived, however, when thirty seconds later, Stone scored her second goal of the night, beating keeper Jasmina Smith, to give the Racers a late 2-1 victory.
"We did well to come back and got the equalizer off of Monica's (Sanchez) well-timed run and finish," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "UNOH is a good side and did a lot of work in the middle of the field which we didn't defend well. Elizabeth Campbell and our back line did a great job all night and posed challenges for them so we definitely had some nice things happening for us. We will stress the attacking component of our game as we prepare for our next match against Thomas (GA) University."
Northwest Ohio (1-0) outshot Brenau (0-1-1) 13-6 for the match. Brenau keeper Jasmina Smith saved four shots to take the loss, while Nadine Stonjek notched two saves in the win.
Brenau returns to the pitch on Sunday August 31st at 7:00 pm when they play host to Thomas (Ga.) University in a non-conference match.
