Soccer Wins Quarterfinal Match Versus Faulkner
In the opening round of the SSAC tournament, the second seeded Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team overwhelmed Faulkner University, 4-1 on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers wasted no time taking control when in the 8th minute Vanessa Alexander (Toronto, Canada) found Esther Anyanwu (Lagos, Nigeria) to score the opening goal.
In the 12th minute, Brenau continued their early attack as Kirsty Smith (Doncaster, England) found Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, Ga.) to increase the lead to 2-0.
Smith continued her deft passing when in the 34th minute, the senior found Alexander to give the Golden Tigers a commanding 3-0 lead.
In the 82nd minute, Smith recorded her third assist of the afternoon, setting up Kayla Madsen's second goal for a 4-0 lead.
Faulkner added a late goal in the 90th minute to avoid the shutout.
Brenau outshot the Faulkner 22-7 to capture their 15th win of the season.
"We got off to a great start by getting an early goal in this game and the second goal put them [Faulkner] back on their heels. We were able to expose their back line frequently with some good attacking play but Faulkner battled for the entire 90 minutes," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "It's exciting to make it to the final four of this always challenging SSAC tournament and I'm really proud of this team!"
The #13 nationally ranked Golden Tigers now travel to Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday to face #19 ranked Martin Methodist in the SSAC semifinals. The Golden Tigers defeated the RedHawks 4-0 in their lone regular season meeting.
