Golden Tigers Down Grizzlies, 2-1
The #20 Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team continued their rigorous march through the regular season, dispatching a tough Georgia Gwinnett College team, 2-1.
Brenau jumped ahead early when in the 20th minute, junior Vanessa Alexander (Toronto, Canada) found Jenny Knibbs (Doncaster, England) to put the Golden Tigers on the board.
Minutes later, the Grizzlies' Mary Vernetti tied the score at 1-1 when she slipped a shot past keeper Tori Brown (Windermere, FL) for the equalizer.
In the second half, both defenses tightened up and neither team could secure an advantage.
Undaunted, the Golden Tigers kept their focus, when in the 71st minute, Knibbs notched her eighth assist of the season by finding Esther Anyanwu (Lagos, Nigeria) for the game winner. The goal was Anyanwu's 18th of the season and her sixth game winner.
Each team had seven shots on goal, while Tori Brown saved three shots to secure the win.
"We got a great result against a very good GGC team. It was a midfield battle with very few shots on either side," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "I thought we defended well and thanks to Hannah [Norwood] for coming up with a huge defensive play in the final seconds of the match to preserve the win. And, Jenny Knibbs had a great game offensively for us as well".
The win improved the Golden Tigers' record to 9-3-1 (5-1 in SSAC play) on the season.
Brenau returns to conference play next Saturday at 1:00 eastern when they travel to Mt. Vernon, Ga. to take on Brewton-Parker College.
