Brenau Soccer Defeats #17 Mobile
In their seventh consecutive road match, the Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team showed determination and put together a complete performance in their 3-1 victory over NAIA #17 ranked University of Mobile.
The Golden Tigers once again started quickly when at the 1:52 mark Esther Anyanwu (Lagos, Nigeria) scored from 22 yards out to give Brenau a 1-0 lead.
The lead, however, didn't last when MaKelle Pena evened the score for the Rams in the 23rd minute.
Momentum returned to the Golden Tigers before the intermission when Anyanwu scored her 2nd goal of the afternoon on a penalty kick to make the score 2-1.
In the 66th minute, Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, GA) found Kirsty Smith (Doncaster, England) at the top of the box to give the Golden Tigers a 3-1 lead and secure the win.
The Brenau defense had an outstanding effort in the match, allowing only one 2nd half shot and keeping the Rams scoreless in the 2nd half.
"We played our best game to date against a very good team," said head coach Mike Lochstampfor. "This was a complete team effort and I'm very proud of them and the unified effort they demonstrated to win this match. Our defense was outstanding- to limit a ranked opponent to just two shots on frame says it all. And, what a great result for our seniors as this is the first time they have ever beaten a UM side."
The win upped the Golden Tigers to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Brenau plays only their second home match of the season on Thursday when they host Belhaven at 7 pm.
