Golden Tigers Soccer Earns Hard-Fought Tie
Coming off a strong opening home win to start the 2013 season, the Brenau University soccer team battled the Union University (TN) Bulldogs to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, Brenau was unable to capitalize on their strong offensive play. Early in the second half, however, the Golden Tigers' offense came through as the duo of Esther Anyanwu (Lagos, Nigeria) and Jenny Knibbs (Doncaster, England) connected for Brenau's lone goal.
"The goal was a great finish on the part of Esther," said Coach Mike Lochstampfor. "Jenny Knibbs recognition of Union's defensive shape and the subsequent ball that she played was brilliant".
The Golden Tigers were unable to hold their lead as the Bulldogs scored the equalizer later in the second half. On the game tying goal, Coach Mike Lochstampfor credited his team's effort, saying, "We had pressure on the ball, but they hit a great shot that took a deflection and was just out of the reach of Tori [Brown]".
Despite having some opportunities in the 2nd half and both overtimes, the Golden Tigers were unable to capture the win.
Coach Lochstampfor noted strong play from his team, praising their effort: "Elizabeth Campbell (Richmond Hill, GA) was aggressive and did a ton of work, and up top Vanessa Alexander (Toronto, Canada) was dangerous all night. Jenny Knibbs also did extremely well coming off an injury from the previous game".
"I thought we played very well, especially with the number of players nursing injuries. Considering we played twelve players and were able to match up to Union's use of many substitutions, our effort and the result was a solid one and I'm proud of this team".
The Golden Tigers continue their road trip taking on #13 Cumberland University (KY) on Sunday at 2 pm eastern (1 pm Central). The game will be Live Streamed at:
