Golden Tigers Soccer Wins Opener
Three goals by senior Esther Anyanwu and a clutch save by junior keeper Tori Brown highlighted the Brenau Golden Tigers soccer team's 3-1 opening match win over SCAD-Savannah.
The Golden Tigers struck first in the 10th minute as senior Kirsty Smith (Doncaster, England) assisted on the first Anyanwu goal. The senior duo struck again in the 27th minute as Anyanwu gathered a Smith pass and found the back of the net to give the Golden Tigers a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Coach Mike Lochstampfor noted that, "Although we started the game a little slow, we built momentum and were able to capitalize on two breakaway goals by Anyanwu to go up 2-0 at the half".
The Bees had an opportunity to cut into the Brenau lead on a penalty kick; however Brown shut down their momentum with a strong save.
"Credit to SCAD, they had a couple of great chances but I thought our back line and Tori [Brown] were solid tonight with Hannah Norwood coming up big on several occasions," said Coach Lochstampfor. "Brown's save on the penalty kick was huge and took some momentum from them".
In the 65th minute, the senior from Lagos, Nigeria capped off her stellar day with her third goal, this time assisted by senior Jenny Knibbs (Doncaster, England) to increase the Golden Tiger's lead to 3-0.
SCAD-Savannah avoided being shut out by scoring in the 81st minute.
The Bees outshot the Golden Tigers 6-5 on the day.
Coach Lochstampfor discussed his team's overall performance, saying that, "I thought we struggled to play our game as a team but individually there were some gritty performances. It's always great to win the first game of the season and against a quality team like SCAD-well coached and hard working- makes it even more special. I was very proud of our effort and the result tonight".
The Golden Tigers take to the pitch on August 30th when they travel to Union (TN) University. Match time is 7:00 pm.
