Tigers Blank Bears for Fourth SSAC Win
The Golden Tigers soccer team ran its overall record to 8-3-0 overall, 4-2 in SSAC play after a 7-0 victory on the road at Truett-McConnell College yesterday.
Although Brenau only recorded 16 shots for the entire match, almost half of those ended up in the back of the net. The Tigers were equally strong defensively- disallowing any real scoring opportunities for the home team.
Brenau started the scoring in the 23rd minute as midfielder; Linda Chukwuji (Lagos, Nigeria) put a well placed shot in the corner of the net from a Jenny Knibbs(Doncaster, England) assist. Ten minutes later, Knibbs herself finished off the second goal of the game on a tremendous play that began with an overlapping run and a well paced cross from right back, Anna Garrett (Marietta, GA). The third and final goal of the first half came from a Kirsty Smith (Doncaster, England) corner kick that curled in and struck the far post of the goal to send the Tigers into half-time with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Brenau was relentless on the attack with Knibbs getting her second goal of the game just four minutes in from a Kayla Madsen (Gainseville, GA) assist. Chukwuji would add her second goal of the game on a 25 yard left footer into the upper corner and Chukwuji was active on both sides of the ball all match long. At almost 70 minutes of play, Madsen would score her first of the game, combining with Knibbs again to knock home the 6th goal of the match. Smith closed out the scoring when she hit a ball into the far corner of the goal after running it down at the top of the box.
Brenau's defense was strong throughout the match and recorded its second straight shutout. Lochstampfor praised the defensive effort saying, "Our back line was excellent once again and Hannah Norwood (Grayson, GA) did a great job of keeping us organized." Tori Brown (Windermere, FL) was up to the challenge recording 4 saves for the match.
Coach Lochstampfor was excited with the result saying, "I think this was one of our most complete results to date. It is an always challenging venue to play in and I think the team did well to match Truett's initial intensity! We defended well and then executed very well offensively. I'm pleased that our scoring is spread around and we are seeing a lot of excellent team play on both sides- both in our attacking and defending efforts."
Next up for Brenau is a trip to Montgomery, Alabama for a match-up this weekend with Faulkner University on Thursday, 2pm CDT, followed by a Saturday game against Auburn University-Montgomery at 1pm CDT.
