The Golden Tigers soccer team finished up their SSAC road trip over the weekend in Hattiesburg, MS with a loss to the NAIA #8 ranked William Carey University Crusaders on Saturday by the score of 3-1.
Poor weather and field conditions made the game a challenge for both sides but didn't slow the Tigers down as they started the match with 13 shots in the first half. Many of those were on target and, but for some spectacular goalkeeping on the opponent's end, Brenau could have easily been up by 2 goals by half-time. However, William Carey found the back of the net first on a goal by Malin Barrulf off of a Christa Robinson assist to get the home team up 1-0 at half-time.
Both teams came out strong in the second half and despite worsening weather and field conditions, both defended well and created chances. In the 51st minute, it was once again the
home team that took advantage of a free-kick with Tori McDevitt getting the goal for WCU.
Brenau continued to battle and were rewarded for their efforts when
Elizabeth Campbell played a well-timed ball to
Kayla Madsen who put the ball in the roof of William Carey's goal to get the score to 2-1. The re-energized
Tigers continued to push numbers forward creating many scoring opportunities but were unable to get the equalizer. And, in the process they conceded another goal to the home team in the waning minutes of the match.
The result drops the Tigers overall record to 6-3 on the season, 2-2 in SSAC play. Next up for Brenau is a home match on Wednesday, October 3rd against SSAC foe, Southern Wesleyan
University (SC). Match time is scheduled for 7pm at Allen Creek Soccer Complex.
