Golden Tigers Devastate No. 21 William Carey
GAINESVILLE, Ga - The Brenau University soccer team continued their winning, as they hosted conference opponent, NAIA nationally ranked #21, William Carey University. The Golden Tigers continued to build momentum in their conference play, by achieving 4 consecutive wins. As Brenau defeated their ranked opponent, they advanced their overall record to 4-3-2 (4-1 SSAC). William Carey fell to a record of 4-4 (2-1 in SSAC).
In the first half of the match, no goals were scored, even with William Carey taking 8 shots and Brenau attempting 5.
"The pace of the game in the first half was much slower than anticipated but equally so for both teams. Both teams had some great scoring opportunities, our defense and solid goalkeeping saved us on a couple of those dangerous chances they had, and Jenny Knibbs (Doncaster, England) narrowly missed the goal on a 1 on 1 with their goalkeeper," Coach Mike Lochstampfor stated.
He went on to say, "The second half was a much different game as it opened up. Once again, they had some nice chances that were thwarted by either solid defending or some unbelievable saves on the part of first year goalkeeper, Tori Brown (Windermere, FL). Overall, our back four did a tremendous job all day with Hanna Martin (Toccoa, GA) winning a ton of balls for us, Hannah Norwood (Lawrenceville, GA) kept us organized as usual, and Janay Hunt (Madison, AL) and Anna Garret (Marietta, GA) were solid on the outsides. Jenny Knibbs got a nice goal from Anna Garret's assist to put us up by 1 goal. William Carey came back 5 minutes later and scored the equalizer. From there on, it was back and forth for the remainder of the game.
With William Carey out shooting Brenau, 14-9 in the second half, goalkeeper Tori Brown played a large role in controlling the tempo of the game, as she made 6 saves during the two halves.
Once the game went into overtime, the first few minutes provided Brenau with several opportunities. The Golden Tigers changed the look of their offense, and it paid off as Kayla Madsen (Flowery Branch, GA) took the ball and ran for 40 yards before delivering a well placed ball into the far corner of the goal for the game winning goal, with 4:09 left on the clock!
Coach Lochstampfor concluded by saying "It was great to get a hard fought win against a very solid team and a nationally ranked opponent such as William Carey. We defended well and battled hard throughout the game and eventually our efforts paid off."
The soccer team will be back on the field this Friday, September 30th @ 7pm, when they face off against Berry College.
