Boyd’s top-ten finish leads Golden Tigers to a seventh-place finish
St. Simons Island, GA- The Golden Tigers placed seventh at their first team event of the season with a trip down to the King and Prince Golf Course at St. Simons Island.
Host Coastal Georgia brought universities from five different states, including NCAA D1 The Citadel, for a highly competitive field. The squad competed against a field of 57 players, who faced windy conditions and cooler temperatures over the two-day tournament.
Team captain Morela Boyd struggled to find her game on day one by posting an opening round 83. However, the Merritt Island, Fla. native capitalized on her scoring chances in the final round to shoot the fourth-best round of the day (76) to climb the leaderboard to secure tenth place, which is marks her seventh top-10 finish as a Golden Tiger.
Freshmen Audrey Bacic, Emily Minish, and Lainey Addison all battled the wind on day one, but all three players were able to rally on day two to improve their scores by six, three, and seven shots, respectively, during the final round.
When asked about his players' performance after the tournament, head coach Mark Elam said, "Conditions were tough day one, and we did play on the most exposed part of the course when the wind was at its peak, but the scores we shot on day one were pretty disappointing. I was pleased with the improvement on day two as the team shot 21 shots lower, and everyone showed improvement. Our performance on day two will help give us more confidence moving forward."
The Golden Tigers next take their first-ever trip to the Sunshine State to compete at the inaugural Battle at Black Diamond hosted by the New College of Florida, in Lecanto, Fla., on September 23rd.
