Golf Competes At AAC Championships
The #24 Brenau golf team placed seventh overall at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Spring Championships played at the Tennessee National Golf Club in Loudon, Tennessee this past weekend.
The squad fired a 346 on the opening day, but rallied with a 331 on the final day of competition to post a 677 team total.
Individually, Sara Jane Bowers led the Golden Tigers with a two-day 164. The senior struggled on day one with an 88, but rallied for a strong 76 to place tied for 14th.
Niquole Mangal tied for 16th with a consistent 82-83—165, while fellow sophomore Ashley Omidi notched an 81-88—169 to place in a tie for 26th.
Macie Hurst (95-84—179) and Amber Clayton (98-95—193) placed 51st and T63rd respectively.
Bryan College's Krista Reinhardt captured individual low medalist honors with rounds of 75 and 72 for a score of 147.
"In round 1, Ashley (Omidi) and Niquole (Mangal) played well and managed their game around a very difficult course," said head coach Damon Stancil. "Unfortunately, our team total put us too far behind the leaders to make up all the shots we gave away on Monday."
"In round 2, Sara Jane (Bowers) played great and was able to break back into the 70's. Macie (Hurst) rallied well from a poor scoring day on Monday. Posting 331 on day two helped, but we need to work hard over the next week to get ready for the Direct Qualifier."
Two non-conference programs, Northwestern Ohio and Freed-Hardeman University, clinched the top spots with scores of 646 and 657 respectively. AAC teams SCAD-Atlanta (657), Tennessee Wesleyan (658) and Milligan College (662) rounded out the top five.
Milligan College clinched the overall AAC season team championship, which combines fall and spring championship scores.
Brenau closes out the regular season on April 23-24 at the AAC Direct Qualifier in Tega Cay, South Carolina.
