Golf Takes Third To Close Out Fall Season
The Brenau golf team wrapped up their fall slate with a third place finish at the Sixth Annual Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational, hosted by Sea Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
The Golden Tigers shot a team score of 656 (+80) on the 5,995 yard, par-72 course to finish merely three strokes from second-place.
One day one of the tournament, Brenau struggled to a 334 mark on the scoreboard. However, the squad answered with a second day 322- the lowest team score of the day- to hold fast to third place.
"The team responded well on day two after a pretty lackluster performance in round one," said head coach Damon Stancil. "We weren't focused or resilient enough, mentally, on day one to cope with the difficult weather and some poor shots. As a team, we played ourselves into a hole that we couldn't climb out of, even with a very good round two."
Senior Sara Jane Bowers recovered from her opening round 83 to fire a second-day score of 77 to earn sixth place. Teammate Niquole Mangal notched a consistent 81-81-162 to place seventh, while Megan Reddick also played consistent (83-83-166) golf for a tie for tenth place.
Macie Hurst (89-81-170) and Ashley Omidi (87-84-171) claimed T15th and T17th places respectively.
Loyola (La.) University won the team championship with a 636, while Faulkner's Hannah Sager won the individual title with a 76-77-153.
"I was very proud of how the ladies played and maintained their composure on Tuesday. The course set-up was much tougher for round two and they were able to post the low team score for the day," said Stancil. "I'm confident the team will continue to work hard during the break between the fall and spring seasons, so we can be ready to go January."
"Overall, I am very happy with our fall season and look forward to even better scores from the in the spring."
Brenau, which closes out the fall season with team wins at both the SCAD Invitational and the St. Andrews Invitational, will begin play again next spring in search of their first Appalachian Athletic Conference title.
