Golf Wins Golden Tigers Invitational
Propelled by a season-best showing, the Brenau golf team won the Golden Tigers Invitational against a competitive field at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. on Monday and Tuesday.
The team shot a consistent 326-326=652 to outpace Southeastern (Fla.) University by seven strokes to capture the team title.
"This is a great win for our program," said head coach Damon Stancil. "The ladies did a great job of grinding out two very good totals on Monday and Tuesday which enabled us to outpace the other eight teams, including #14 Southeastern and #39 Freed-Hardeman University."
"We took advantage of playing our home course, which isn't always easy, and closed out the biggest team win in program history."
Individually, Morgan Wood and Sara Jane Bowers tied for fourth overall to lead the Golden Tigers on their home course. Wood shot 80-79=159, while Bowers matched her teammate stroke for stroke with the same 80-79=159.
Ashley Omidi (80-82=162), Amber Clayton (86-86=172) and Megan Reddick(86-86=172) also had strong showings to help rally their team to victory. Fellow Golden Tigers LaKese Brown (89-87=176) and Olivia Davis (90-94=184) competed as individuals.
Freed-Hardeman University (347-322=669) placed third, while conference rival, the University of Mobile, (350-337=687) placed fourth. Truett-McConnell College (360-346=706), Reinhardt University (353-354=707) and Bryan College (362-352=714) rounded out the top seven.
After the match, Coach Stancil recognized his two seniors-Morgan Wood and Lauren Smith- for their contributions to the program.
"I can honestly say it's been a real blessing to be a part of Morgan and Lauren's lives over the past four years," said Stancil of his two seniors. "I'm so proud of both of them and how they have conducted themselves in all they do. They are wonderful representatives for their families, their team and Brenau University and I don't believe I could have found two better young women to build this program around."
Brenau next competes at the Spring Phoenix Invitational at Windtree Golf Course in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee on April 10th and 11th before the SSAC Championships in Montgomery, Alabama.
