Big Third Quarter Propels Basketball Past Clinton College 68-55
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team's strong third quarter propelled the squad past Clinton (SC) College 68-55 for the squad's second consecutive win of the season on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers stormed out to a fast start as the front court of Jael Flinn and Caylie Long combined for 11 points in the quarter to help the team jump out to an 18-11 first-quarter lead.
However, the Bears turned the tables with a strong 15-10 second quarter as the visitors outshot the home team 46% to 27% in the period. The run allowed Clinton to cut into the Brenau lead and narrow the deficit to 28-26 going into the break.
The third quarter proved to be a turning point as the Golden Tigers went on a 10-0 run to blow open the game. Flinn started the run with a score in the paint, then senior guard Anna Gliatta nailed a deep contested three-pointer to extend the lead to 33-26. Junior point guard S.G. Bertolini stole an errant Clinton pass, then found Gliatta in transition in the deep corner for another three-pointer to make the score 36-26.
The momentum carried the home team throughout the final frame to secure the team's second consecutive win.
Junior forward Caylie Long led the Golden Tigers with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Bertolini posted 9 points, 9 assists, and 6 steals. Gliatta posted 12 points, and sophomore guard Aiyanna Peavy chipped in 8 points.
Posts Mariya Shields and Jael Flinn combined for 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Jabrica Leslie led Clinton with 17 points.
Brenau (2-2 overall, 0-1 AAC) stays at home for a rematch against Toccoa Falls (Ga.) College (0-2 overall) on Wednesday at 5:30 pm. The Golden Tigers defeated the Eagles last week 78-70 in a non-conference game.
