Point Slips Past Golden Tigers Basketball 71-64
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team put forth a valiant effort but came up just short in a 71-64 loss to Point (Ga.) University in an Appalachian Athletic contest on Wednesday.
After the visiting Skyhawks jumped out to an early 18-12 lead in the first quarter, the Golden Tigers responded with an 18-14 quarter to cut the deficit to 32-30 at the half. In the quarter, freshman Anna Gliatta scored eight points, including two three pointers, while senior Jasmin Jackson added four points in the run.
In the third quarter, Gliatta added another three pointer to give the home team its first lead of the game at 33-32, however, Point responded with two consecutive scores to regain the advantage. Both teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes until Point closed the period on a 11-2 run for a 55-43 lead.
Brenau opened the final stanza on a 7-2 run with baskets by sophomore Kayla Stafford, senior Katherine Fourie and junior Pollie Simpson to cut the lead to 57-50. The Golden Tigers continued to push forward and cut the lead to 66-60 with 1:10 remaining, but the squad was unable to finish out the rally.
Gliatta led Brenau with 16 points, while junior Nyla Moore added 11 points and five rebounds. Tyleia Williams added 11 points and Simpson posted seven points. Stafford also chipped in six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Mirial Cannon led Point with 17 points.
Brenau next takes on Johnson (Tenn.) University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Gainesville.
