Basketball Wins Season Opener Over Voorhees 66-60
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a 66-60 win over Voorhees (S.C.) College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
The Golden Tigers led the entire first half behind a hot shooting performance as the squad shot 7-14 from three-point range. Senior Katherine Fourie and freshman Ellie Kinlaw combined for five three-pointers in the half to help the home team take a 32-28 lead into the break.
In the second half, Voorhees pushed Brenau throughout the period, cutting the lead to only two points on three different occasions.However, each time the Golden Tigers answered to hold onto the lead.
In the final 10 seconds, the visiting Tigers had a chance to steal the game as Voorhees' Ty'Shemia Bunkley forced a steal off an errant inbounds pass to cut the deficit to 63-60.
After a Voorhees fouled on the ensuing possession, Brenau senior Tyleia Williams hit her first free throw to increase the lead to 64-60, but missed the second of two free throws. However, Golden Tiger sophomore Kayla Stafford grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to seal the victory.
Williams, who missed the 2022-23 season due to injury, led a balanced Golden Tiger attack with 12 points. Kinlaw scored 11 points in her first collegiate game, while Fourie added 9 points, including shooting 3-5 from three point range. Sophomore Jill Pittman added seven points and freshman Anna Gliatta tallied six points and four assists in her first college action.
Stafford also posted six points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Nedisha Ford led Voorhees with a game-high 17 points.
Brenau (1-0 overall) next travels to take on Reinhardt (Ga.) University in the opening game of the AAC slate.
