Basketball Slips Past Bluefield 85-82 in OT
Bluefield, Virginia- Junior Hanna Grogan hit a clutch three pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and help the Brenau basketball team defeat Bluefield (Va.) College 85-82 on Wednesday.
In the first half, the host Rams shot a blistering 47% from the floor and guard Cierra Cook scored 21 of her game-high 28 points to help give the home team a 44-33 lead at the break.
After intermission, Bluefield kept the Golden Tigers at bay until the 3:01 mark as Tyleia Williams found Carmen Garcia-Pitarch Lopez for a layup to cut the lead to 54-45. On the ensuing possession, Tamia Francis found fellow sophomore Xian Lopez for a fast break layup, then Lopez returned the favor by finding Francis for a layup to cut the deficit to 56-49. Lopez then added two free throws just before the end of the quarter to make the score 56-51.
Again the Rams held control throughout the fourth quarter as Kianna Campbell made two free throws to make the score 74-71 with seven seconds remaining in regulation. Lopez then found Grogan on the right wing, who shot a step back three pointer with no time on the shot clock to tie the game at 74-74.
In overtime, Grogan's reverse layup gave the Golden Tigers its first lead of the game. The squad held pace throughout the overtime period and made free throws down the stretch to escape with the victory.
Grogan led Brenau with 18 points on 6-11 shooting, while Francis added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Williams notched 14 points and Dyiesha Brown chipped in 10 points.
Brenau outshot Bluefield 50.8% (31-61) to 40.3% (31-77) from the floor, while the Rams held a 64.7% (11-17) to 50.0% (16-32) free throw advantage.
Brenau (10-14 overall, 7-13 AAC) next hosts Kentucky Christian University (13-14 overall, 11-11 AAC) for Senior Day on Saturday at 2 pm in Gainesville. The team will recognize seniors Dyiesha Brown, Jamie Bunting, Nikki Carter, Tiara Ellis, Chloe Ireland, Carmen Garcia-Pitarch Lopez, Cameron Mims, Celine Vega and Maddy Zaferatos immediately after the game.
