Basketball Players Honored By SSAC
Members of the Brenau basketball team were honored by the Southern States Athletic Conference for their performances during the 2016-17 season at the conference banquet last week.
Senior Briah Woods and junior Autumn Dodson were each selected as 2017 SSAC Second Team All-Conference team members for their outstanding seasons.
Woods, a native of Acworth, Georgia, averaged 13.1 points and 6.4 rebounds during her senior season. The forward was tied for ninth in scoring in the SSAC and was 14th in rebounding. She posted five double-doubles (points and rebounds), which placed sixth among conference members, including a career-high 26 points along with 11 rebounds in a win over Loyola (La.) University.
Dodson also averaged 13.1 points and 3.1 rebounds and shot 38% from three point range this season. Among conference members, the Jefferson City, Tennessee native was tied for ninth in scoring, second in three point percentage and third in three point percentage (77%). The junior sharpshooter posted 23 double-digit scoring games this season, including a season high 22 points against Life (Ga.) University.
Four Golden Tigers were honored for the academic achievements as Jalyn Brown, Sydney Haas and Dominique Patrick joined Dodson on the SSAC All-Academic team. Team members must achieve a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and be enrolled in at least four semesters of college.
Jasmine Knight also received the 2016-17 Champions of Character recipient for Brenau. In addition to her strong character, the junior guard had an outstanding year on the court for the Golden Tigers, notching seven points, eight rebounds and four assists in her first season with the squad. Champions of Character recipients are awarded for best representing the NAIA's Five Core Values of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership.
"This team deserves all of the accolades that they are due," said head coach Kris Stewart. "In addition to breaking the school record in wins and breaking into the upper echelon of the conference, we posted an excellent academic record, which is most important."
"I am very proud of all of these honorees, but also the entire group of young ladies for all that they have accomplished."
Brenau returns 12 letter winners to the 2017-18 team, which looks forward to the challenges of competiting in the new Appalachian Athletic Conference.
