Basketball Drives Past Brewton Parker
The Brenau basketball team used a strong first quarter and stifling team defense to defeat Brewton Parker (Ga.) College 69-45 in Southern States Athletic Conference play on Thursday in Mount Vernon, Ga.
In the first quarter, Sydney Haas scored nine of her game high 16 points to help the Golden Tigers jump out to a 19-7 lead.
However, the Barons responded with a 17-13 quarter to make the score 32-24 at the break.
After the intermission, the Golden Tigers' defense clamped down, allowing only 10 points in the third period. Briah Woods scored on back to back baskets early in the period, while Kaylyn Brooks scored on a driving layup and ensuing free throw to give Brenau a 13 point lead at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Brenau offense continued to keep the pressure on the Barons as Kaelyn Irby found Emily Mote in transition for a layup. After a Brewton Parker turnover, Irby found Jamie Bunting open for a corner three-pointer to give Brenau its largest lead of the game at 24 points.
Brenau held Brewton Parker to 19% (12-63) shooting, while the Golden Tigers shot 43% (25-58).
"We really competed hard against a good team on the road, especially in the second half" said head coach Kris Stewart. "We had a lot of great performances today. Our point guards combined for 22 rebounds and our team defended very well. This was a great team win."
Haas led all scorers with 16 points on 6-10 shooting. Woods added 14 points, while Brooks chipped in 10 points. Jasmine Knight added seven points, eight rebounds and 4 assists, while Quinnesha Turner added five points and five rebounds.
