Basketball Rolls Past Coastal Georgia 67-46
A strong defensive effort and a big second quarter helped the Brenau basketball team run past Coastal Georgia 67-46 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday in Gainesville.
After leading 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, Jasmine Knight scored eight of her 14 points in the period to help spur an 18-7 run to give the Golden Tigers a commanding 38-24 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, the Brenau offense continued to roll as back to back baskets by Dominique Patrick and a driving layup from Kaylyn Brooks extended the lead to 56-33. The Brenau defense held the Mariners to only 11 points in the period to take a 21 point lead into the fourth quarter.
The Golden Tigers kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter as Maddy Zaferatos scored five consecutive points to give the squad their largest lead of the game-24 points- and to help secure the team's 12th win of the season.
"We had a really strong defensive effort today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We had a great day of practice previous to this game and it really showed today. I am proud of how we played as a team and I think we are in a great position going into the second half of the conference schedule."
Knight led Golden Tigers with 14 points and 10 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season, while Autumn Dodson added 10 points. Patrick chipped in eight points, and Kaelyn Irby scored six points.
Kaci Palo led the Mariners with 14 points.
