Basketball Wins Two At SWU Invitational
The Brenau basketball team won both games at the Southern Wesleyan Invitational this past weekend in Central, SC.
On Friday, the Golden Tigers defeated St. Augustine (Fla.) University 93-81 to win the opening game of the invitational. After leading at the half 49-42, the squad outscored the Falcons 44-37 over the final two frames to capture the win.
Autumn Dodson led all scorers with 19 points, while Briah Woods and Sydney Haas combined for 29 points in the win.
On Saturday, Brenau faced Southern Wesleyan who jumped out to an early 25-6 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, three pointers by Maddy Zaferatos and Shymane Callahan cut the deficit to 25-12. Then baskets from Kaylyn Brooks, Carmen Garcia-Pitarch Lopez and Woods pulled the Golden Tigers to within six at the half.
In the third quarter, Dodson and Woods combined for 15 points to give Brenau their first lead of the game and ultimately the win.
Dodson led all scorers with 15 points, while Woods added 14. Dominique Patrick added 11 points and seven rebounds
"Our mental toughness and depth really showed this weekend," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Credit goes to our bench for their play in the second quarter against Southern Wesleyan for getting us back into the game."
"Both St. Augustine and Southern Wesleyan are good programs and the experience of playing them on back-to-back days will serve us well in conference play."
Brenau (5-0 overall) plays their first home game of the season against Life University on Tuesday at 5:30 pm eastern in Gainesville.
