Basketball Falls to Middle Georgia State
Cold shooting plagued the Brenau basketball team as the Golden Tigers fell to host Middle Georgia State University 67-61 on Saturday.
In the first half, both teams struggled to find their rhythm as the neither team seized control. Post Nekeia Brown kept the Golden Tigers in the game with five points and seven rebounds in the first ten minutes, but was plagued with foul trouble the rest of the period.
Junior guard Kalin Williams also played well in the early going, scoring eight first half points. However, foul trouble and poor shooting continued to haunt the Golden Tigers as Middle Georgia took a 32-29 into intermission.
The second half proved to be similar to the first as Brenau couldn't find the mark. The Knights increased their lead to 13 points in the late second half, but back-to-back baskets by freshman Autumn Dodson kept the game close.
In the last two minutes, Brenau cut the deficit to four points, but missed free throws followed by a missed offensive rebound put back sealed the loss for the Golden TIgers.
"We really struggled shooting the ball today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We were in foul trouble all game and we let it affect our play. Our defense kept us in the game and we had a chance to win toward the end, but it just didn't happen. It was a definite learning experience for us and we will improve because of it".
Williams led Brenau in scoring with 13 points. Dodson chipped in 10, while Brown added seven points and 12 rebounds.
Jamarra Taylor led Middle Georgia with 18 points.
Brenau shot 17-57 (30%) for the game, while Middle Georgia was 20-58 (35%) from the floor.
The Golden Tigers (7-7, 3-4 SSAC) next play host to non-conference opponent Allen (S.C.) University on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
