Golden Tigers Basketball Falls To Emmanuel
A furious comeback came up short as the Brenau Golden Tigers lost to the Emmanuel (Ga.) College Lions 74-63 on Thursday.
In the first half, the Golden Tigers started slowly, falling into an early 10-1 deficit. A strong defensive effort kept the score close for the first 12 minutes as Brenau kept Emmanuel's offense in check. The Lions, however, broke free for a 10-0 run right before the half to take a 35-20 lead into intermission.
The Golden Tiger offense found its rhythm in the second period as a furious rally allowed Brenau to cut the deficit to two points with eight minutes remaining. Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) and Que Turner (Winterville, Ga.) led the charge as the two guards accounted for 20 second half points to keep the Golden Tigers in the game. However, Brenau was unable to take the lead and the Lions pulled away 74-63.
"We really struggled in the first half and didn't play with enough energy or discipline," said head coach Kris Stewart. "I give credit to our team as they made the adjustments and found a good rhythm in the second half. We spent too much energy making a comeback and we came up just short. It is a learning lesson for us, but I am proud that they fought back".
Wiley's season high 23 points led the Golden Tigers. Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) added 10 points and Turner chipped in 9.
Emmanuel was led by Joreshica Martin's 18 points.
Brenau (11-10, 6-7 SSAC) shot 19 percent (6-31) in the first half and 30% (17-56) for the game. Emmanuel shot 44% (25-56) on the evening.
The Golden Tigers continue their conference play on Saturday at 2 pm when they travel to Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University .
