Brenau Basketball Splits First Two SSAC Games

Mobile, AL- Brenau dropped a road game last Friday in the first SSAC game of the season- the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team fell to Spring Hill College, AL by the final score of 82-62.
Spring Hill jumped out to a 9-0 lead and extended the lead to 12 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Golden Tigers offense sprang to life with back to back three pointers by freshman guard Claire Zimmerman (Woodstock, Ga.), cutting the Spring Hill lead to four points. A three pointer by Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) and a cutting layup to Raven Crawford (Toccoa, Ga.) gave the Golden Tigers a 37-36 lead at halftime.
The second half, however, was all Spring Hill, who shot 46%, including seven three pointers. Brenau could not match the pace, shooting only 31% from the floor. The Golden Tigers were led by Crawford's 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Senior Gabby Harvey (Lilburn, Ga.) added 11 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. Senior Sarah Ward(Elberton, Ga.) chipped in six points.
Spring Hill was led by Bria Bohanon's 14 points.
Brenau faced conference foe University of Mobile on Saturday afternoon- in hopes of managing a win on the road. The outcome proved to be a winner as the resilient Golden Tigers defeated the University of Mobile 59-52.
From the start of the game, the Golden Tigers controlled the pace, jumping out to a 13-1 lead. Junior, Tala Black (Marietta, Ga.) scored seven points in the first four minutes and 13 total points in the first half, while Harvey contributed six points and six rebounds in the first frame. The fast start allowed Brenau to take a 31-24 lead.
In the second half, the game tightened as the Rams cut the lead to three with four minutes to go. But, three pointers by Ward and Black, combined with a put back by senior Nikki Reed (Atlanta, GA) allowed the Golden Tigers to escape with a 59-52 lead.
Brenau was led by 16 points from Black, followed by Reed's 14 points and eight rebounds. Harvey contributed eight points and eleven rebounds, while Crawford scored eight points and pulled down a game high 15 rebounds.
Brenau out-rebounded Mobile 52-44, including 18 offensive rebounds. The Rams were led by Deonica McCormick's 25 points.
Brenau finished their first conference road trip with an overall record of 3-3 (1-1 in the SSAC). They will face Reinhardt University on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Brenau gymnasium.
