Late Runs Propel Softball Past CIU
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau softball swept Columbia International (S.C.) University 7-6 and 6-5 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ernest Ledford Grindle Athletics Field this week on Saturday
In the first game, sophomore Riley Smith singled home fellow sophomore in the bottom of the 7th inning to take the walkoff win 7-6.
Sophomore Whitney Hulsey went 2-4 with 2 RBIs, while senior Aly Penland went 1-1 with 2 RBIs as a pinch hitter. Smith, Abigail Brown and Hannah Patridge each added two hits in the win.
Starter Sarah Shaw battled for seven innings to earn her eighth win of the season.
In the nightcap, the Golden Tigers again scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-5 win. Penland again drove in junior Tivona Myles for the tying run, then sophomore Cameron Harkey hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Carley Cox for the go-ahead winning run.
Penland went 2-4 with an RBI, while freshman Ava Moon drove in two runs and stole two bases.
Golden Tiger starter Maliah Lee threw 3.2 innings with four strikeouts in relief to earn the victory.
Brenau (14-8 overall, 7-3 AAC) next travels to Tennessee Wesleyan University (8-7 overall, 7-3 AAC) for an AAC doubleheader on Monday at 3 pm and 5 pm eastern.
