Softball Splits Two at Gulf Shores Invitational
Gulf Shores, Alabama- The Brenau softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the 2020 Gulf Shores Invitational on Friday.
The Golden Tigers lost the opening game 12-3 against Lyon (Ark.) College but rallied to defeat William Woods (Mo.) University 8-4 in the second game of the day.
In the opener against Lyon, the Brenau allowed four runs in the second inning and eight runs in the third inning to get into an early 12-1 deficit. Brenau rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as pinch hitter Madison Oliver doubled to left to drive in senior Autumn Conaway and junior Karly Smith but the team was unable to sustain the momentum.
Starter Brooke Wakenigg pitched two innings and allowed seven earned runs in the loss. Senior Shelton Kendrix also drove in a run.
Against William Woods, Golden Tigers sophomore pitcher Brooke Kibbe threw a complete game and Autumn Conaway drove in three runs to help their team win 8-4.
Kibbe, a native of Hoschton, Ga., scattered eight hits and allowed three runs to capture her second win of the season. Conaway, a Guyton, Ga. native, led the offensive charge with a 2-3 day at the plate, while juniors Faith Grooms and Brooke Wakenigg each added two hits and two RBIs. Senior Tabitha Morrison also drove in a run and stole a base in the win.
Brenau (4-5 overall) will play three games on Friday as the squad takes on Baker (Kan.) University at 9 am, Central Methodist (Mo.) at 11:30 am and #8 University of Mobile (Ala.) at 6:00 pm.
